Gratitude

You may not be aware that going to the Democratic National Convention takes a pretty good sum of money - about $2000 - and it's NOT covered by the party.

Most of the folks who go are just regular people like me. Fortunately, my husband and I make a comfortable living but we don't have a lot of money to throw around. I had a little in savings and after I was elected to be a delegate, I started putting a little more away specifically for the trip. I'd planned to use my credit card for the rest.

Money is tight and I didn't want to assume others would be able to help much. Then, my fellow Democrats started stepping up with donations.

At the August meeting of the Polk County Democrats, the committee voted to give me a generous donation. I've also received donations from individuals; my Emerge Oregon sister, Kellie Pierson, and my fellow Polk and Marion County Democrats: Jean Sherbeck, Gloria Holland and Aileen Kaye. Together, these will cover my plane ticket and about half of my five-night hotel stay.

While I could probably have squeaked by and covered the whole cost on my own, I'm also saving for another trip in a few months. I recently received word from my son and daughter-in-law that they are expecting my first grandchild November 30!! They live in Louisiana so it's not cheap to visit.

By helping with convention expenses, my wonderful Democratic friends have made it a little easier for me to live my dream of being an Oregon Delegate to the Democratic National Convention AND go meet my new grandson when he gets here - all in the same year!

The donations I've received won't cover the entire cost of the convention but I'm absolutely not complaining. I am so blessed. You all have my heartfelt thanks!
